Strange copper reduction during electrolysis of NaCl over US quarter dollar

The composition of the US quarter dollar coin is mainly a copper slice sandwiched in between by stainless steel.

I prepared an ordinary brine solution of NaCl and used a battery to connect two simillar us quarter dollar coins. Making one anode and the other cathode. The battery used was an ordinay 12v battery SLA.

While i closed the circuit and the electrolysis began , one of the coin started to produce bubbles (chlorine gas) and the other coin was turned darker n darker!!!

After about two minutes both the coins were removed and then washed.
The coin over which bubbles were produced was unchanged n shiny but the other coin which turned darker when washed showed a copper coating of copper colour on its surfaces.
I could not understand how it was copper plated instead of Sodium !!!!! ???
